The Italian government is divided over a bill which would give inheritance and healthcare rights to gay couples and unmarried heterosexual couples. The bill is currently before Parliament with members speaking out strongly both in favour and opposition to the bill. Senior representatives from Opus Dei and the Vatican have been vocal in their opposition to the bill and consequently there are significant concerns that if the bill does get through the parliament, it will be unrecognizably watered down.
