Today is International Transgender Day of Remembrance.
A day to remember all the people who have died as a result of transphobia and an opportunity to draw attention to the continuing challenges faces by trans* people.
The day was founded by Gwendolyn Ann Smith to commemorate the death of Rita Hester who was murdered in Allston Massachusetts in 1988.
The event will be marked in Perth with a gathering in Hyde Park this evening, people will be meeting at the Rotary Stage near the corner of William and Vincent Streets.
A recent report estimated that 238 trans* people had been killed in the last year. 1374 trans people have been murdered in 60 countries since January 2008.
