The Greens have announced that educator and multiculturalism advocate Toni Pikos-Sallie will be their candidate in the seat of Southern River.
Pikos-Sallie will take on incumbent Liberal MP Peter Abetz and Labor’s candidate School team Terry Healy.
One Nation had previously announced  anti-abortion crusader Michelle Meyers as their candidate for Southern River, but she has now been reassigned to Bateman.
Pikos-Sallie is teacher and Deputy Principal with degree in Economics and History from UWA, who also holds a Masters in Education and is a current Doctoral candidate for a PhD.
The newly announced candidate is an experienced public speaker who promotes harmony and social cohesion and a member of the WA police Muslim advisory group.
She’s a volunteer in the Homeless Connect Perth project, a coordinator of volunteer work for secondary students, a part of the Building Bridges in Schools interfaith dialogue program and a recent supporter of the White Ribbon Schools Program to increase student awareness about the important issue of domestic violence.
Pikos-Sallie grew up in the Western suburbs of Sydney but has lived in Western Australia since 1996, she is the mother of five children aged between 5 and 19.
The aspiring politician previously spoke about her faith in an interview with the Sydney Morning Herald. The profile formed part of a feature on Muslim Australians.
