Character, quality and complexity are just a few words that describe great wine. They also describe the beautiful Barossa Valley in general – an ideal destination for the city weary traveller looking for a little time out.
Australia’s most famous wine region was settled in 1839 by Lutheran peasants and English gentry. Vines were planted from the 1840s. There are now about 60 wineries, large and small each offering a little something different and allowing you to taste before buying.
English settlers chose the high grounds around Angaston and Eden, the Lutherans settled on the low ground where impressive churches were built which stand today. Early German residents preserved their language and culture through religion, music, food, architecture and crafts. Scrumptious German style yeast cakes, smoked meats, smallgoods and preserved fruits are all available for the sampling and provide the ideal picnic hamper fare.
It’s so easy to load up the car and head north for just over an hour’s drive and arrive in another world for an enchanted weekend where stress simply melts away. Sounds all a bit airy fairy, but it’s true – you really do unwind as you kick back with stunning local wine, fabulous local produce and a good book.
Two places we would highly recommend in order to achieve this state of wellbeing are the Barossa Vista B&B and the Novotel Barossa Valley Resort.
Barossa Vista is located just off the main street in Tanunda and is a 1920’s bungalow with all the mod cons. Once you glimpse the views from the rear patio, you understand how it got its name. The views go on forever and include the Turkey Flat Vineyards famous for its reds. Barossa Vista is a fully self contained B&B with three large bedrooms, study and an open-plan dining/loungeroom with an open fire. The stunning, state-of-the-art gourmet kitchen allows you to prepare your own meals using wonderful Barossa produce. All chef-quality kitchenware is provided and appliances include; a fruit juicer, automatic espresso maker, Bosch cook top, oven and dishwasher.
The décor is a mix of old and new with many touches courtesy of owner Nadia’s travels abroad. The cottage is air conditioned with the open fireplace providing a warming ambiance. The main bedroom has its own en-suite and spa bath for that perfect romantic encounter. Light the candles, splash a few fragrant bath salts into the water, grab a wine (and if you’re lucky – a companion) and submerge yourself for an hour or so in pure bliss.
The main living area features an entertainment system with countless DVDs, CDs and over 100 books and is also covered by wireless internet should you wish to go online. Traditional Chinese games such as Mahjong and Chinese Chess have also been provided.
All this and just a stroll to the village centre makes Barossa Vista an ideal romantic destination and a chance to really spoil yourself is luxurious surroundings.
The Novotel Barossa Valley Resort is the first major resort to be built in the Valley. It’s another perfect destination in which to pamper yourself, relax and have fun. The Resort is set in a natural amphitheatre overlooking Jacob’s Creek and Rowland Flat and just a short drive from Tanunda.
It’s the full-on resort style accommodation that features a sparkling swimming pool, mountain bike hire, golf, tennis courts, volley ball, the list goes on and on. There’s also a new Endota Spa at the resort where you can experience a fantastic full body makeover or massage.
The rooms are spacious and modern, all with private balconies, panoramic views of the surrounding vineyards and the creature comforts you’d expect of a resort of this style. All suites are equipped with kitchenettes, sitting area, TV and queen sized beds. Nine suites have spas for that extra special treat.
When the hunger pangs set in, it’s time to venture to Harry’s Restaurant where the Barossa’s finest produce is on offer. But if you’re lucky enough to be visiting on a Saturday night, stop off first in the main foyer where you’ll find a local winemaker doing tastings for guests. Also on offer in this special tasting room is a selection of wines and produce from the area for sale.
As you enter the restaurant you’re greeted by an open fireplace and a warm, welcoming atmosphere in which to enjoy a pre-dinner drink before dinner.
Next time you manage to get a few days off, seriously consider the Barossa Valley and all it has to offer. It’s so close, it’s romantic and it’s a getaway that guarantees relaxation.
