March 27: The International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission (IGLHRC) released a statement accusing the Thai government of failing to uphold international law on human rights over hate crimes committed against lesbians and gender variant women.
The IGLHRC has urged the Thai Government to order an immediate investigation into the rape and killing of fifteen lesbians and toms that have been documented since 2006. The IGLHRC accused Thai police of having dismissed the killings as love affairs gone sour and therefore failing to adequately investigate the killings as homophobic and transphobic hate crimes.
Speaking on behalf of the IGLHRC, the organisation’s Executive Director Cary Alan Johnson called for an immediate investigation into the failure to properly investigate the deaths with the results to be released in a press conference that includes local LGBT groups and the Thai Human Rights Commission.
