Department store giant Target have released a statement in the USA confirming their position on bathroom policy amidst a heated national debate.

Target have made it known that transgender staff and shoppers are welcome to use the restroom or fitting room that fits their own gender identity.

Some US States, namely Mississippi, Tennessee and North Carolina, have recently introduced laws that restrict bathroom use for those of diverse gender identities, with some states even requiring ID to use the restroom.

“Recent debate around proposed laws in several states has reignited a national conversation about inclusivity,” the statement from Target reads.

“Inclusivity is a core belief at Target. It’s something we celebrate. We stand for equality and equity, and strive to make our guests and team members feel accepted, respected and welcomed in our stores and workplaces every day.”

The statement also outlines the retail giant’s support for the federal Equality Act, which would amend the USA’s Civil Rights Act to include protections for sexual orientation and gender identity, and ban discrimination in education, accommodation, employment and housing.

“Everyone deserves to feel like they belong. And you’ll always be accepted, respected and welcomed at Target.”
