The WA Speaks survey has revealed that 70% of respondents are in favour of marriage equality. The survey was completed by 8332 people, considerably more than most opinion polls engage.

Regardless of age demographic the support was over 50%, but was considerably higher among younger voters.    Older men were more likely to be opposed to marriage equality.

The survey comes as parliament resumes this week with the government’s bill for a national plebiscite facing certain defeat in the senate.

On Friday Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull told reports that despite not having the numbers to pass the bill he was still hopeful that Labor or The Greens may change their stance.

“At this stage more senators are saying they will vote against it, but we will continue to press the Labor party,” the Prime Minister told reporters in Tasmania on Friday.

On Sunday Senator Derryn Hinch reaffirmed is opposition to the bill. The Senator took to Twitter to confirm he would definitely be voting against the plebiscite bill saying the issue should be determined by a free vote in parliament.
