Review: When We Wake

Some people don’t ever read the synopsis of a show before they see it because they believe that if the play doesn’t communicate its story across to its audience, it’s not good enough.

Well, I cheated.

I read a couple of reviews- I couldn’t help it. The title of the show ‘When We Wake’ is kind of intriguing and a little misleading. It could mean a thousand different things but when I figured it was about Armageddon I was pretty much sold.

Five individual stories were written by five different writers, intertwined into one big story revolving around the idea of the end of the world. I enjoyed the contrast between all the stories- how different each writer’s idea of the end of the world was.

They weren’t all equally entertaining, I personally preferred Jordan Nix and Holly Garvey’s take on Armageddon. Nix’s Packing scene was a simple concept going away to try and find a safe place to hide. The dialogue was simple yet extremely entertaining.

Garvey’s Inroads piece spoke of raw and honest fear laced with a good dose of humour. The other three were entertaining but not as memorable as Packing and Inroads.

When We Wake is showing at The Blue Room from September 13 to October 1.
