Punk rock singer Kim Shattuck from The Muffs dies aged 56

Punk singer Kim Shattuck who was the lead singer of The Muffs, and a member of other bands including The Pandoras, The Beards and Pixies, has died aged 56. Shattuck passed away after combatting Motor Neurone Disease for the last two years.

She was the lead singer of punk band The Muffs from 1991, the band are best remembered for their punk cover of Kim Wilde’s Kids in America alongside their original hits Lucky Guy and Sad Tomorrow. The band released four full length albums during their career.

Prior to being in The Muffs, Shattuck was in The Pandoras from 1985 until 1990. The band were part of the Paisley Underground scene in Los Angeles in the mid 80’s.

The musician also had a short stint as a member of acclaimed indie band Pixies. She joined the band for their 2013 tour following the departure of founding member Kim Deal, but was fired by the band at the end of the tour.

Longtime collaborator, and fellow member of The Muffs and The Pandoras, Melanie Vammen described the news of Shattuck’s passing as heartbreaking.

“My heart is forever broken,” Vammen posted to Instagram.

A final album from The Muffs is due to be released on 18th October.
