Project Runway Australia – Ep 2

It’s week two of Project Runway Australia and here’s our weekly TV blog post about it. There will be spoilers, so if you haven’t watched it yet – don’t read any further.

This week the designers were challenged to create a dress for Danni Minogue’s Project D label, it was a perfect piece of cross promotional programming for Arena.

After meeting former singer and actress, now celebrity judge and fashion designer Danni, and her business partner Tabitha Summerset Webb, the designers were off to the fabric shop hoping their budget would allow them to buy enough material to actually make a dress. Craig gambled all his money on some expensive lace meaning he had to make the rest of the dress out of jersey, and they kept going on about him using the jersey, how risky, how interesting.

OK – so I had to look it up, jersey is as cheap knitted fabric from the Jersey Islands. Originally made of wool, today it’s more likely to be cotton, but it’s cheap and stretchy. Coco Chanel caused fashion outrage when she used it eons ago, at the time it was a fabric mainly used for underwear.

Timothy walked around the fabric shop demanding service and then went back to name dropping for the rest of the episode.

The highlights of designer fashion (what they wear, not what they make) was Macho’s shawl which ran in close competition with Nerida’s headband. It was a hot competition in the art of taking some left over fabric and throwing it over yourself. The ultimate champion however was Amanda who managed to squeeze in both a head scarf that matched the fabric of her skirt and a poncho, which is after all just a bit of fabric with a head hole cut in it.

The winner of host and guest fashion this week was clearly Danni who managed to squeeze in four outfits, more than both Alex Perry and Megan Gale. Tabitha equaled Danni in outfits but since she’s never sung at Mardi Gras – she naturally can’t win anything.

So a whole bunch of dresses were made and thrown down the catwalk and there were two big shocks. Firstly how did Matcho’s wacko couture creation not end up in the bottom three? And secondly how did Timothy survive with his slit-so-high-you-can-actually-see-her-knickers, exposed side boob, giant red frilled disaster?

And then there were nine. Amanda was thrown off for her dress being stuck in the 80’s but let’s be fair so was Amanda – referencing Sheena Easton and wearing an outfit to the catwalk that looked like she too was from the cast of Blake’s Seven.

So the big questions… which judge likes Matcho so much? How long will Timothy survive? What is with sunglasses on the head Alex? Will we get to see an early morning shot of a make-up free Dylan? Will judges Kirilly and Brad ever say anything interesting?
