Premier Mark McGowan: "It's Time. Vote Yes."

WA Premier Mark McGowan has reasserted his support for marriage equality in Australia while addressing the WA Labor conference this morning.

McGowan echoed sentiments shared by Federal Labor Leader Bill Shorten yesterday, saying that now was the time to allow LGBTI+ Australians to marry the person they love.

“My friends, there is another battle we must win. I have always been proud that Labor is the party of equality,” McGowan said.

“And so I have two more words for you – it’s time. It’s time for marriage equality.”

McGowan also condemned the government’s upcoming postal survey on marriage rights, but encouraged Western Australians to get involved and vote Yes.

“The Turnbull Government’s $122 million postal plebiscite is not the ideal way to achieve it, but just because we don’t like it, doesn’t mean we should boycott it,” the Premier said.

“We cannot afford more delay on such an important issue as equality.”

“If you believe, like I do, that equal marriage rights are human rights, let us work together to make our belief a reality. Let’s get out there and campaign.”

Yesterday, WA Labor also reaffirmed their commitment to anti-bullying programs in Western Australian schools, including the Safe Schools program.
