People. A word from Uncle Aram.

lick @ connections

It seems to me Perth promoters are throwing a lot of party opportunities for us queers – yay! But of course, this cornucopia of gayness will only be successful if we all get off our, er, couches and go . . . Disappointingly, not so many did when it came to the last Climaxx (and no one likes a poor showing at climax, do we now?!), but those who were there were treated to another quality night. The situation at Lick was a little different, with hordes of girls going down . . . to Connections to engage in a little Playboy Mansion-ing. The action was so hot, the prize of WOW Cover Girl had to be shared between the two finalists – I for one look forward to seeing them on display shelves soon.

F**k Me I’m Famous, Wednesday night at The Shed continues to pull a good crowd, particularly later in the night. It’s now got company in the weeknight queer stakes with Phoenix in East Perth throwing open the doors every Thursday night for Code 7465. Code 7465 plans to set a cracking standard of entertainment, if the opening night was anything to go by. Organisers are promising that they won’t be a one-night wonder, but will put together more of the same fabulousness to keep their Thursday crowd happy. (If you’re wondering where this mythical Phoenix is – hark back to the days of Pink Thursday nights, and you’ll find it… on Hay St. in East Perth.)

The Court and Connections tick over with their ever-reliable and ever popular nightly trade. Connections opens the door to partygoers Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights, and the Court trucks in marquees and heaters to keep their punters happy outdoors whilst they rip the guts out of the indoors. Even amongst all the sawdust they’ve still got things in the works – look out for Courtship (a new queer dating night coming Thursdays, sometime later in May) and drag shows on May 5th and 12th featuring a cast of thousands.

High(er) brow drinks and socialising are still also to be had at Pride’s two monthly sundowners – The Women’s Sundowner at Grapeskin, every 2nd Wednesday, and the newly relaunched Professional Network, at the Brisbane. Don’t be confused by the Monday launch of the latter – it’s going to be held every 3rd Wednesday of the month from now on.

Meanwhile, after a renovation-related hiatus in April, Village Peephole returns to the upstairs bar at the Sail and Anchor, Freo on the 23rd. For all you Fremantle hippy (and non-hippy!) queers out there, this is your chance to drink and converse whilst listening to ‘gay music for gay people’ without having to trek all the way into the big smoke. The doors open at 7pm, so get along and support something local.

If that’s not enough to keep you going – and I know you want more – there is a smorgasboard of one-off events on offer in May as well. First and foremost: XES. Pride’s ‘other’ dance party returns to it’s origins as the darker, dirtier, more grown-up Pride party with 2007’s theme – Deep Desires. The DJ line-up showcases local talent with a penchant for dark and grinding sets, and there’s rumours the performances will be more than a little left of centre. Get your tickets, dress for desire, and get down to (the newly renovated) Heat nightclub on May 19th.

Another one that should be a firm date in the diary is Armin van Buren’s White Party, set to explode June 8th at Metro City. The guy is ranked the number 2 DJ in the world, a favourite at Ibiza and all of his previous shows have sold out VERY quickly. This one looks no different as he promises an extended set and some spectacular sound and visual production – so get in quick and dress in white (duh).

For something equally impressive musically but a little less tinnitus-inducing, the Gay and Lesbian Singers present Divas and Dy-kons at the Bakery, May 4th. It’ll be a celebration of gay songwriters and well worth a look.

But wait, there’s more.

If you want something heavier there’s a feast of chunky DnB and Breaks presented by an impressive international lineup at the Bass Sessions – June 3rd, from 4pm at the Dean.

The Madhatter’s Ball, May 19th, at Ambar is another sure fire fun-fest bringing together a masquerade party and some fine tunes (note the diary clash with XES, though).

And I’m tired just writing about it all! See you all next month… no doubt with a very sore head.
