Veteran actor Christopher Plummer has been nominated for the best supporting actor Oscar for his role in Mike Mills’ film The Beginners. In the film, based on Director Mills own life experiences, Plummer plays a elderly man who comes out after his wife passes away. Plummer who is best known for his role as the father of the Von Trapp family in The Sound of Music(1965) recently won the Golden Globe award for his performance.
Albert Nobbs, a film about a women living as men in Ireland at the turn of the last century has gained an Oscar nomination for lead actress Glenn Close and a best supporting actress nod for Janet McTeer. The film is also in the running for the best make up trophy.
In the best song category there were only two nominations with a song from the recent The Muppets movie facing off against an tune from the animated film Rio. Left out of the nominations were Madonna, who won the Golden Globe last week for her song Masterpiece from W.E., Elton John, Mary J Blige and Elvis Costello.
The 84th Academy Awards will be announced on Monday February 27
