New Years Resolutions

New year, new start… yet past battles – those that are lost, those that continue to be fought and those won – will continue to mould the community and it is upon reflection of where we have come from and where we wish to end up that defines the path ahead. So with that in mind, OutinPerth asked prominent community representatives what their New Year’s resolutions and wishes for the future of the GLBTI community involve.

I would wish all members of the GLBT community a year which sees more personal happiness and great health for everyone. I truly hope that those few people in the world who still have a problem accepting that not everyone is ‘straight’ gets over their biased views and that we start to look at people as simply people and look at the personality and spirit of a person more than their sexuality.

Lord Mayor of Perth

For 2010, I hope the GLBTI community has a lot more fun. I hope we get more gaiety back into the word gay.
John Hyde MLA
Member for Perth

My New Year’s wish is for an end to bullying of gay and lesbian kids in schools and proper services for homeless young people. Also that Perth Pride will be re-invigorated with new and enthusiastic people who can see it as a unique opportunity to be creative together and have fun on the streets of Perth.

Member for North Metropolitan Region

I´d like to see the Perth GLBTI community becoming less introverted. I´d like to see us taking more risks, trying new things and talking to more people. I´d like for us to break the habit of routine and to become more open minded and more willing to try new things.
Kitty Hawkins

Acceptance for ALL members of our community and a happy and healthy 2010.
Charles Denham

To support our community and each other and rekindle the family aspect we once had and that felt special to be a part of.

I wish for a year filled with joy, love, happiness, good health and fun for the GLBTI community in 2010. I hope that next year we can all sit back and finally see the government recognise same sex relationships more fully and enable those who want to marry to do so.
Mark Reid
Diverse Sexuality Health Promotion Manager, WAAC

For 2010…my wish would be one where the Perth GLBTIQ came out and were more supportive of community groups, especially those that are there to help and assist others in our community that are less fortunate.
Terry Larder
Founder of Club West, drag artist and writer

I hope that people start to get more involved with their community. That they don’t complain about the things they don’t have but get engaged and add to the diversity of experience in this city.
Tim Brown
DJ and Club Guy

Mutual respect to all and have a sense of humour….life’s better with a smile.
Alvin Fernandez
Designer of æ’lkemi

Remember who we are! STAY GAY.

To everyone in the GLBTIQ community, I hope all your dreams come true this year and treat people the way you would like to treated.
Cathy Rankin

I want us to create a more exciting, dynamic community, one that stands up for itself, is accountable to itself and sets a high standard for itself, one based in morals, insight and bravery. I’d like to see some of those super skinny boys I saw out on NYE eat a burger, hire a stylist and learn to dance. Less hair on the girls. A Pride Festival that spans art, photography, literature, fashion and dance. And a sense of style that is more directional.

During the Pride season the community has a massive influx of theatre, gay cinema, arts etc. I would love to see more of this injected into the community throughout the year as we have so much talent in our community which deserves to be seen and heard.
