Malawi’s LGBT community experienced a few days of freedom last month, when the government momentarily suspended laws criminalising homosexuality.
Spanning from the 3rd to the 5th of November, the suspension meant that LGBT citizens and tourists could avoid being reported on or arrested for engaging in consensual homosexual sex.
The change sent shock through the region, which is known for having particularly heavy sentences. Those in opposition of the moratorium have claimed that the change of heart does not come from a shift in local views, but rather a fear of losing international donors. LGBT tourists can be ejected from the country, being labeled as ‘undesirable aliens’.
