Missy Higgin’s second album still smacks of her trademark Aussie twang. However, the album departs from its predecessor ‘The Sound of White’ in notable ways. Lacking the youthful passion of her debut, ‘On a Clear Night’ opts instead for more professional arrangements, sophisticated lyrics and a greater exploration of genres beyond the piano pop ballad. While I’d love to see Missy on the ivory more than she is, the album is ultimately a successful move towards a folk and blues sound reminiscent of Aussie greats The Waifs.
