Green’s Leader Christine Milne has criticised the Tasmanian Liberal party over their decision to support the current marriage act.
At the Liberal Party’s state conference on the weekend the party voted to support the current marriage legislation and rule out same sex marriage.
“They want to take us back to discrimination … and as far away as possible from equal opportunity,” Senator Milne told News Ltd.
Rodney Croome, National Director of Australian Marriage Equality has also criticized the decision.
“Marriage equality is about fairness, family and personal freedom, all of which Liberals should support, not undermine.” Croome said.
“At a time when countries like the UK and the US have moved forward on marriage equality it is outrageous that the Tasmanian Liberal Party wants to take us backwards.”
“The majority of Tasmanians who support marriage equality will be appalled that the Liberal Party has upheld discrimination in one of our core social and legal institutions.”
