Madonna the Director

The trailer for Madonna’s second feature film W.E. has premiered online. The Material Girl’s first outing as a Director was for the film Filth and Wisom that had a limited release. The romantic drama W.E. juxtaposes the story of King Edward VIII’s abdication of the British throne to marry divorcee Wallis Simpson with a contempory story between a married women and a Russian security guard set in New York. A similar story telling method was used in the Meryl Streep film Julie & Julia.

W.E stars Australian actress Abie Cornish as Wally Withrop in the modern day part of the film while British actor James D’Arcy takes on the role of Edward VIIII. Rising star Andrea Riseborough (Party Animals) plays Mrs Simpson while Natalie Dormer, best known for her portrayal of Anne Boleyn in The Tudors takes on the role of Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, the future Queen Mother. The costume’s for the film have been designed by Arianne Philips who also designed the stylish costumes for A Single Man. No Australian release date has been annouced yet.
