The Asia Pacific Outgames has secured further sponsorship. The event will be held in Melbourne from January 30-February 3, 2008 and currently, there are 12 sports on offer: badminton, dancesport, field hockey, lawn bowls, rowing, run and walk, squash, swimming, ten pin bowling, tennis, volleyball and water polo. Instead of recovering from another Saturday night, why not dust off those budgie smugglers on Sunday morn and hit the Wesley Sports Club at Wesley College in South Perth (off Angelo St) for a swim and coffee. FOOTY

This month saw the WAWFL women wrap up the regular season and take to the playoffs. The League Grand Final will be held on Sunday September 2 between the East Fremantle Sharks and the Coastal Titans. Below are the final results for the season.

BADMINTON

G&L Badminton is still growing, with new people coming every week and adding more fun to an already great night! This increase has necessitated meeting with the Alma Venville Recreation Centre staff, who have kindly catered to our growing needs by adding 4 extra courts across the other basketball court. They have also invested in new nets and poles, so by the time of your reading this, we should be playing across 7 courts, which means everybody will have even more games. We are also looking at a name for our club, so when you see our tent at Fairday, please pass by and write down your suggestion – a great prize will be given to the winner!

GAELIC

The Coastal Breakers have convincingly secured a spot in the semi-final with an emphatic win over Morley in the last game of the season. It’s an outstanding achievement for a club in its first year – easy to overlook when expectations have grown by the week. That in itself speaks to just how far the club has come.

The semi final should be a corker against top placed Greenwood who have been unbeaten this season, though the Breakers have been very close to beating them, with 3 point and 2 point losses in the last two match up. A few people are quietly touting the semi final as the grand final… but at just a whisper when around the other contenders – Southern Districts who have found awesome form in the back half of the season and St. Finbars, who have been consistent performers throughout. This postseason will be the most evenly contested final series in a few years – it could be anyone’s.

Both weekends of Women’s Gaelic Football will be worth a watch, the two semi finals are on Sunday 2nd September at 11.45 and 2.15 and the women’s grand final will be on Sunday September 9 at 2.00. All games will be at Collier Reserve in Como – even if it’s only to help rotate the beer stocks and make a patch of grass flat, get down there and check it out.

On the social side, things are coming together for the Breakers as well. They had a hugely successful Texas Hold ‘Em poker night on Friday just gone. Huge thanks to all those who donated, pitched in to help and those who came along in support. The winner kindly put his takings on the bar… an indication of the night that was – the morning clean was done not with a vacuum but a heavy duty leaf blower (yeah, and?). Keep an ear to the ground for future events.

Finally, several of Coastal Breaker players – including Kezia Jones, Angela Williamson, Jay Williamson, Jen Hose and rookies Lisa Bryant and Chris Kreppold – have been selected for the state side, which will compete in NSW in early October.

TENNIS

Loton Park, on the corner of Bulwer and Lord St, has been Perth’s premier gay and lesbian tennis club since 1995. All levels are catered for and beginners are more than welcome to come down. The focus is on having fun and enjoying the friendly atmosphere. Early diary warning – Loton Park Tennis Club’s Annual Open Day is Saturday 6 October 1.00-6.00pm. Women’s Day at Loton Park Tennis Club will be Sunday 14 October 1.00-5.00pm. So, come down and make new friends at these free events whilst enjoying/discovering tennis as well as drinks from the bar and a free sausage sizzle.
