Calling Youth Input
Pride WA is searching for fresh ideas from the state’s Gen Y community in its first Youth Forum for 2010. Held at the Freedom Centre on July 6, the QU forum hopes to canvas many topics concerning young LGBT people under 26-years-old. Committee member Paul Hamer said the forum will inform the Pride committee with insight into what today’s youth are looking for. ‘Now is the time for young people to have their say and make a difference,’ Hamer said. Anyone wanting to attend can RSVP at youth@pridewa.asn.au

MSM Suffer in Silence
Gay men were excluded from a recent study examining partner abuse in intimate relationships in WA. The research paper revealed it was unable to recruit any Men who have Sex with Men (MSM) volunteers for the project. However, the Man Advisory Network (MAN) paper ‘Intimate Partner Abuse of Men’ predicted MSM relationships were at a higher risk of close partner harassment. A number of explanations were suggested including denial, fear of further violence and isolation. Lack of access to appropriate services for MSM was also suggested, pushing for special services tailored to these men.

Northbridge Makes History
The Northbridge History Project wrapped up last month, boasting a momentous collection of paraphernalia since it began in 2005. The five-year project collected around 3,000 images, 400 audio recordings and over 500 documents. There are pieces from the area’s Aboriginal occupation to the post-Second World War waves of migration. Northbridge’s history project also took part in traditional Perth festivals like Pride WA Fair Day and the Northbridge Festival. While the project itself has finished, it has left a wealth of knowledge available to the public and future generations. Check out the enormous collection at http://www.northbridgehistory.wa.gov.au/

Game, Set, Match
In a changing of the guard, the Swan siblings, Shane and Michelle have taken out the Mens and Womens titles at the Loton Park Tennis competition. Troy Hancock and Geoff Younger won the Men Doubles while Loma Jowett and Robyn Ekberg claimed the Womens Doubles. Troy Hancock and Jocelyn McClennan took out the Mixed Doubles, with a host of other awards given on the night. Last month, the club’s Annual Dinner was glammed up for a ‘High Rollers’ theme made up of evening wear and 60s chic. Loton Park’s winter and social games are well underway now with the regular season resuming in early October.

Test Your Wits
Zoe Carter and Mark Reid return this year to MC one of Pride WA’s key events on the calendar, the Annual Quiz Night. This year’s event will be held at the Italian Club in North Perth on Friday July 9. As the first of many events to come, this evening is set to test the limits of your trivial knowledge. With tables of 8 or 10, Quiz night looks to be a great night out with friends. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased through the Pride WA website. Doors open at 6.30pm.
