Recognising LGBT Leaders
Pride WA’s Glammy Awards have returned this year to recognise outstanding contributions from the community at this year’s MASKerade Ball. Nominations opened last month, providing an opportunity to acknowledge people, organisations and businesses in Western Australia. Masks are mandatory for this year’s MASKerade Ball as Channel 10’s Narelda Jacobs takes the reigns as the master of ceremonies. The Hit Factory will be playing live for the event, to be held in the Ballroom of the Novotel Langley Hotel on Saturday August 28 with tickets on sale via prideball@pridewa.asn.au. Glammy nomination forms are also available on the Pride WA website www.pridewa.asn.au.
Marriage Ban Anniversary Action
For the National Day of Action on Marriage Equality, the Equal Love Rally is back this month with marches planned across the country for the anniversary of the same-sex marriage ban. Greens Senator Rachel Siewert and high-profile lawyer Patti Chong will speak at the Perth March set for Saturday August 14 at Forest Place in the city. Over 600 people have said they would attend on the Rally’s Facebook fan page with extra entertainment from local bands and drag performances. For more details, email equallovewa@gmail.com.
New Clinic Success
WA AIDS Council’s new Men’s Sexual Health clinic has reported great results since its opening last month. The West Leederville M Clinic opened on July 19, offering free and confidential STI testing and treatments for men who have sex with men. Michael Atkinson from the clinic said people really liked the neutral setting and peer based approach. ‘I get a sense that people like the neutral, anonymous setting. It’s absolutely attractive to gay men and MSM who don’t identify as gay,’ Atkinson said. He went on to say the clinic was achieving its goal of reaching men who the Council knew wouldn’t go to the Sauna or WAAC Clinic.
Club West Celebrates 21 Years
Tying in with Pride WA’s theme, Club West is celebrating its 21st birthday this month with the theme ‘Together the Key’. Returning from Glastonbury, Ash Baroque will take the stage with 1995 BAFTA winner Strykermeyer and Swish Eveready for the first time together on stage. Club West Organiser Terry Larder said the event was now going on 21 years. ‘It’s remarkable that our community still attends these events,’ Larder said. Club West will be held at the Italian Club on Saturday August 14 from 7.30pm. All proceeds go to the Royal Perth Hospital with tickets available at Coode St Cafe, Club X Northbridge and on www.clubwest.com.au.
