Earlier this month, 16 specially trained officers began duty as the states first Gay and Lesbian Liaison Officers with one servicing each of the local service areas including the sex crimes and major crimes branches.
The officers would establish networks between police and the gay community to assist with the reporting and investigation of crime.
Both men and woman have been chosen for the role and the officers are not necessarily gay themselves. The training program for the officers included topics such as domestic violence, reporting of crime and dealing with homophobia.
