The guide is available online and assesses universities across Australia in their inclusivity for LGBTI students against a checklist, using information that is already publicly available. According to its website, the guide is designed “o mirror the experience of what information could be easily accessible to a prospective student who is considering applying to study at a university” and aims to be a resource for potential students.

Wilson said that ensuring universities are a safe space for LGBTI students is an important social issue.

“Ensuring university is a safe and inclusive environment is extremely important for LGBTI students who have often spent years in secondary school fearful of acceptance from their family and peers if they ‘come out’,” said Wilson.

“Australian universities are making progress in building a culture of inclusiveness and respect for LGBTI students and staff, but a number of concerning issues still remain,”

The LGBTI University Guide is the result of collaboration between the NSW Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby, the Star Observer, Transgender Victoria, Out for Australia and Organisation Intersex International Australia.

Wilson found in a consultation last year that schools and universities play a crucial role in building a culture of acceptance for LGBTI people.
