Sixty-six countries, including Australia, signed the UN ‘Statement on Human Rights, Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity’ that called for government’s around the world to decriminalize homosexuality and work to eliminate persecution of people on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. The statement was the first time the General Assembly has formally addressed violence and inequality on the basis of sexuality or gender identity. The U.S., India, China and Russia did not sign the statement.
