Kitty Glitter – The Cat's Meow!

Kitty Glitter is quite possibly the campest drag queen about to hit our state. She’s a towering inferno of diva hits, disco delights and music that will make you lose control. Direct from her residency at Sydney’s ARQ, Kitty Glitter took a moment to chat with OUTinPerth about how fabulous life is, and what fans and newbies alike can expect tomorrow night at Connections Nightclub.

How long have you been DJing for? I had been doing Drag shows for 10 years when I won the DIVA (drag award) for Sydney’s Favorite Drag Queen in 2006. It was after that I decided to try my skills on the decks. I started playing in venues with no real idea at all, but I thrived on purrfecting my mixing techniques. Winning the Diva for Most Popular DJ in ’07 & ’08, the award was sadly taken off the event in ’09. So I guess I’ll be the reigning DIVA DJ forever!

Earliest drag memory? Growing up with a sister who was only a year older than me, meant I could fit in all her clothes. Being the family clown, I got away with it because I would strut around the house and make everyone laugh!
I nearly broke my sisters thumb in a fight once when she wouldn’t let me wear her ‘hot!’ hot pink shiny disco pants!

Describe your musical and visual style and how do the two combine? I would say my sound is a sexy mix of uplifting pop house with sprinklings of electro, retro & of course disco. My look is much the same, in keeping with the energy of my sets. As much as I know it’s impossible, I always strive for flawless perfection.

Which is better and why: big hair or big beats? As in public toilets? That’s easy! Pants down, I believe in the beat baby! Playtime aside, wigs off to BIG BEATS! I could live without the super ‘do’s’, but without music playing its part in my life, I would just want to die.

What’s the best way to get a party started? I think the trick is to mix in and out of different genres, so the overall set ends up pleasing everyone at some point. Of course, people expect to hear their favorite latest hot new pop remixes, but it’s usually the great old classics that get any party started.

What are your top five party tracks at the moment?
FIGHT FOR THIS LOVE- CHERYL COLE
BOYS BOYS BOYS- LADY GAGA
HEY SEXY- SUGABABES
FREEWAY OF LOVE – PEPPER MASHAY
GROOVE IS IN THE HEART- DEE-LITE

What advice do you have for aspiring drag queens? I’d have to say, if you believe you have ‘what it takes’, to make drag a career, then you probably do, so you should take part in as many talent quests and charity gigs as possible. If the crowd response is consistently positive then you need to focus on maintaining that relationship with your character and the public by devoting hours to refining your craft. But beware, unlike your dear friends, audiences will be brutally honest and it’s usually pretty clear if there is any potential professional entertainer in you, from the beginning.

I would also like to say I’m tickled pink with excitement for the opportunity to come over to play in Perth. Aside from the fact it is the only state in Australia I have not been to yet, it seems every hot guy in Sydney, is originally from Perth! Hello Boys! Meow xox

Kitty Glitter appears at Connections Nightclub Thursday April 1, with support from DJs Tim Brown and Johnni P. Doors open 9pm – 3am. Entry $15 all night.
