Jarrod Bleijie throws his support behind marriage equality

attorney-general-jarrod-bleijieQueensland’s former Attorney General, who dismantled that state’s civil unions legislation, has changed his mind about marriage equality and is now a supporter for change.

The Christian and marriage celebrant said his change of position came after some deep introspection and rethinking.

“Supporting civil partnerships, and supporting same sex marriage has not been an easy journey for me,’” Jarrod Bleijie said.

“I have gone from being the attorney-general responsible for abolishing same sex civil partnerships in Queensland, to intending to vote in favour in the forthcoming federal plebiscite.” Mr Bleijie said.

When the Newman government came to power in Queensland Mr Bleijie lead the charge to have the state’s civil partnerships removed, he’s now indicated that he’s in favour of bringing back that legislation.

Writing a column in ‘The Sunday Mail’, Mr Bleijie said he had become increasing uncomfortable with his option to same sex marriage as he performed weddings for friends and relatives.

“Marriage should be a statement of love and commitment between the happy couple; not an institution that rejects those who wish to enter it with the best intentions.’’  Mr Bleijie said.

Australian Marriage Equality national director, Rodney Croome, welcomed Mr Bleijie’s change of heart.

“Mr Bleijie’s support for marriage equality shows this is an issue that can be supported by people of faith and by social conservatives.”

“I applaud Mr Bleijie for opening his heart to those same-sex partners who want to uphold the values of marriage and share its traditions.”

“With support growing right across the social and religious spectrum it’s becoming harder to see why we need a plebiscite, but if we do have one the outcome is increasingly likely to be ‘yes’.” Mr Croome said.

  1. Yeh, good for him. It’s a shame he didn’t change his view on this when he was actually in a position of power. Why do we even care about his views now that he’s an ordinary peon like the rest of us?
