Hong Kong LGBTI group outlines Gay 2017 plan ahead of election

An LGBTI rights group in Hong Kong is calling for the government to support a variety of legislative amendments and protections ahead of the Chief Executive election.

As a Special Administrative Region of China, Hong Kong is led by a Chief Executive elected by a committee of 1,200 members.

This Election Committee is a combination of private citizens and representatives of special interest groups that are both selected and elected.

The Frontline Sexuality Discrimination Legislation (FSDL) are urging members of the Election Committee to make a commitment to the Gay 2017 agenda a prerequisite for securing their vote.

The Gay 2017 plan outlines nine facets including the establishment of a Sexuality Discrimination Ordinance, comprehensive reform of sexual offences laws, recognition of a third sex to protect intersex children and more inclusive education policy.

“LGBTI Equality is an important indicator of human rights and equal protection in Hong Kong,” a spokesperson for FDSL said.

“The FDSL demands that the candidates immediately support the Gay 2017 and promote the human rights situation in Hong Kong.”

So far, 22 of the 1,200 member committee have shown public support for the plan.
