Hong Kong is set to debate whether trans* people who have not had surgery should have the same rights as those who have undergone surgery.
Last year a court ruling was handed down after a trans* women only known as ‘W’ successfully argued for the right to wed. At the time the judge in the case suggested that Hong Kong should follows Britain’s model that does not require a person to undergo surgery to successfully register a change in their gender.
However the legal changes put forward this week suggest that the government is going to pass a law that would require full gender reassignment surgery to be undertaken before recognition will be given.
Hong Kong’s Legislative Council is expected to debate the bill on March 19th.
