The Happy Prince stars Rupert Everett, also in the role of writer and director of the film, as the notorious queer wordsmith.

Wilde is celebrating the great success of his play The Importance of Being Earnest when he is jailed for the crime of “gross indecency” and expelled from London.

“Out of prison but a pariah, Wilde swings between grief and a determination to wrest whatever pleasure and beauty he can from the time he has left,” the film’s synopsis reads.

“His body ailing and heavy, his mind spinning, he survives by falling back on the flamboyant irony and brilliant wit that defined him.”

Everett’s film also stars Colin Morgan, Emily Watson, Tim Wilkinson and Colin Firth as Wilde’s friend Reggie Turner.

Watch the first trailer below. The Happy Prince is due for release in the UK this June.
