Gender Definitions to be Questioned in High Court

Sydney resident Norrie has sparked a High Court case that will determine whether a person can identify as a gender that is neither male nor female on a registry document. Norrie applied for a name change in 2010 and also requested to be legally recognised as neither male nor female. NSW Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages at first agreed, but the decision was subsequently revoked. Last year the case was taken to a NSW Court which ruled that residents of the state can legally identify as neither male nor female. The NSW Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages is now challenging the decision in the High Court of Canberra, which could result in a nationwide change.
