The British Government has deported gay Nigerian man, Olalekan M. Ayelokun, back to his home country, despite calls for asylum based on sexual orientation.
Despite David Cameron stating his opposition to sending gay asylum seekers back to countries where they can face prosecution, Ayelokun was denied the right to stay in the UK.
Ayelokun has voiced his fears in returning back to Nigeria, stating – ‘I feel terrible, traumatised. I am very afraid they are going to kill me in Nigeria’.
Despite the maximum sentence for homosexuality being 14 years in Nigeria, a British judge denied Ayelokun his asylum as he did not believe he was gay.
