Same Sex Marriages began in New Zealand today with radio stations competing to host the first wedding, an airline company organising a high flying ceremony and a whole bunch of New Zealanders making a commitment.

Lynley Bendall and Ally Wanikau walked down the aisle of an airplane. The couple won a competition to be part of the elaborate ceremony that was hosted by ‘Modern Family’ star Jesse Tyler Ferguson.

New Zealand’s marriage equality lobby group, The Campaign For Marriage Equality described the day as historic.

“A massive congratulations to the happy couples tying the knot today. Marriage equality has finally arrived in New Zealand,” said spokesman Conrad Reyners.

Australian Marriage Equality Spokesman Rodney Croome noted that it was disappointing that the Australian government did not recognise overseas marriages between people of the same sex.
