The History of Garbage

Garbage formed in 1993. Butch Vig had made his name as a producer, he was behind some of the ’90s biggest indie rock hits including acclaimed albums from Smashing Pumpkins, Sonic Youth and Nirvana.

The percussionist teamed up with Duke Erikson and Steve Marker, both play guitars and keyboards, and began looking for a vocalist. They found the perfect singer in Shirley Manson when they saw a clip from her band Angelfish on MTV.

Scottish born Manson has been a member of pop-folk band Goodbye Mr. Mackenzie, where she played keyboards and sang backing vocals. She later recorded one album as a member of the band Angelfish, stepping up to the lead vocalist position.

Together the four recorded the bands self titled debut album which came out in 1995. The record spawned a stack of hits including ‘Vow’, ‘Queer’, ‘Milk’, ‘Stupid Girl’ and ‘I’m Only Happy When it Rains’. The band also contributed a song to the soundtrack of the movie ‘Romeo and Juliet’.

The bands second album ‘Version 2.0’ came out in 1998 and the hits kept coming with ‘I Think I’m Paranoid’, ‘Push It’, ‘Special’ and ‘When I Grow Up’. The band also recorded a Bond theme tune with ‘The World is Not Enough’.

‘Beautiful Garbage’, from 2001, was the band’s third record. ‘Androgyny’ was the album’;s lead single, but it didn’t chart as well as the band’s previous songs. ‘Breaking Up The Girl’ and ‘Cherry Lips (Go Baby Go)’ were more popular.

In 2004 the band put out ‘Bleed Like Me’ which had a much harder rock sound. Lead single ‘Why Do You Love Me’ was one of their most successful songs.

Fans of the band then had to wait an epic eight years for the bands next album. ‘Not Your Kind of People’ came out in 2012. The record had five singles and received generally favorable reviews. While the band had been on hiatus Shirley Manson tried recording a solo record but it didn’t work out.
