Film: A Royal Affair

Directed by Helmer Arcel (MA). Arcel has unearthed an exquisite piece of history from 18th century Denmark.  When young Princess Caroline Mathilda (Alecia Vikander) travells from to Denmark England to marry her prince charming – King Christian VII (Mikkel Folsgaard),  all her romantic ideals are quickly shattered. She is faced with a revolting, insulting and downright mad monarch who is controlled by all his advisors. As Queen, Caroline matures quickly, produces an heir and navigates her life to avoid her husband. When he returns from a tour of the land, he brings with him a German doctor, Johann Struensee (Mads Mikkelsen). Caroline is able to study the latest philosophies of enlightenment by borrowing his books and Struensee becomes confidant of both the King and the Queen, who is eager to push her husband to stand up to the court and make positive changes for the people. This doomed love story is full of political intrigue.
