Feenixpawl Are Always On Your Mind

FEENIXPAWLIf there’s one song that has dominated the dance floors in 2012 – without getting incredibly annoying – it would be Feenixpawl’s In My Mind. The dance hit still sounds fun and fresh twelve months after its release.

The collaboration between Feenixpawl, Ivan Gogh from TV Rock and local Perth singer Georgi Kay spent eleven weeks at the top of the dance charts and won the 2012 ARIA for Best Dance Release. The hit has made 2012 a massive year for the two boys behind the monitor.

‘It’s been unreal,’ says Josh Soon, ‘We’ve been plugging away doing this for probably eight years now to finally break through a little bit has been fantastic.’

The other half of the Feenixpawl duo Aidan Forte agrees,

‘When it happens, it happens so fast as well, you’re going along slowly them you seemingly have a hit and it’s a bit overwhelming, we welcome it though – it’s been fun.’

The track has propelled the duo and singer Georgi Kay to worldwide acclaim. We were curious to see how an electronic band from Melbourne came to discover a Perth singer who is a favourite on local community radio station RTRFM and often played in the beer garden of The Court Hotel on Sunday afternoons. Soon explains that Kay caught their attention when she collaborated on a hip hop track with The Stoops.

‘That track was the theme for a Foxtel channel and that went nationwide and we heard that and thought she’s exactly what we need for
this track.’

Forte continues, ‘I just Shazamed the track, and found out her details and sent her a tweet and then we flew her down to Melbourne.’

‘She’s great to work with, and amazing to watch her work’, said Soon. ‘When we sat down in the studio Aden played her a four chord progression and she sort of felt it straight away and started writing lyrics on her phone and was ready to go straight away, you don’t find that very often.’

The journey to success hasn’t come over night, Feenixpawl first gained attention when they released a bootleg of the All Saints track Pure Shores. Now the band finds they are receiving bootlegs of In my Mind from DJs all over
the world.

‘There are a lot of terrible ones, then every once in a while there’s a good one,’ says Forte,
‘It’s flattering.’

Feenixpawl are about the head off on a massive national tour to promote their new CD compilation One Love Sonic Boom Box 2013. Forte feels the CD is a good reflection of the
live experience.

‘The compilation is what we’ve been playing plus our own records, so if you like the CD – that’s what you’re going to get at our shows,’ said Forte.

The pair promised that amongst their touring commitments over the next twelve month they will be putting out some more great records, but with a series of shows planned across America, Asia and Europe in 2013 it doesn’t look like the duo’s life’s will be slowing down anytime soon.

ONELOVE SONIC BOOM BOX 2013 Mixed by Avicii & Feenixpawl is out now.
