Facebook shared information earlier this week that revealed the number of people coming out as LGBTI+ on the social media platform had doubled by the end of 2015.

Also revealed in the data was the popularity of marriage equality as a topic on conversation online, reaching 11th place in Australia and was the 6th most talked about topic on an international level.

The data was gathered by assessing which users had adjusted the “interested in” category on their public profiles to reflect a same-sex relationship. The data also reflects an increase gender-nonconforming people, determined by those who chose a custom gender option for their biography.

The report also showed a 20% increase in the number of pages that are classified as LGBTI+ being liked by users in Australia. Notable spikes in page likes could be seen at the time of Ireland’s referendum on marriage equality, the nationwide achievement of marriage equality in the USA and the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras.
