Local LGBTIQ advocate Kenny McKenzie is hoping to unite Perth’s queer community with the power of social media. McKenzie’s Facebook group, the ‘Perth Queer Community’ aims to be an inclusive online space for anyone who comes under the umbrella of ‘gender and sexuality diverse’.

“My goals are to expand the queer network in Perth and I created this page so that all queer people in Perth can have a place to belong to and also can meet and greet other people.” McKenzie explained to OUTinPerth. “I do realise that there are a lot of queer pages on Facebook but then they’re only for a specific type.

“This one, what I’m doing is I’m aiming for the general queer community so that’s including transgender, sexuality and gender diverse people and intersex people as well.”

McKenzie said the group aims to promote discussions, provide support for younger members of the community and share events. “We try to focus on events that are alcohol free and that are welcome to under 18s as well, just to be inclusive of everyone else…What I’m aiming is to have a lifestyle for everyone, because often queer people are left out because they are different. Society gives us pressure all the time, being not accepted so I want them to have a place to belong to. To have someone to talk to, too.”
