Gabbana, pictured above left, is one of Italy’s famous designer duo Dolce and Gabbanna. The pair were a couple at the beginning of their career, but split in 2004 after 20 years. They continue to work together.

Speaking to Italian publication Corriere della Sera daily, the 55 year old designer said the word gay was invented by people who need to label everything.

“The word ‘gay’ was invented by those who need to label people, and I don’t want to be identified by my sexual choices,” he said.

“I thought that I could help spread a new culture as a famous person, a culture no longer based on gay rights but on human rights. We are human beings before being gay, heterosexual or bisexual,” Gabbana said.

Gabbana said gay associations “often serve as a defence, but I don’t want to be protected by anyone, because I’ve done nothing wrong”.

The designers previous voiced their opinion that gay people should not be allowed to access IVF technology and raise families, a comment they later apologised for.
