Dean Misdale Goes Pop!

Ah, pop. It’s so juicy it literally… pops in your mouth. For some it’s merely the point where disposable culture presents itself, churning out an instance where music, sound, fashion and art briefly fuse and capitulate. For others though it is a way of life. It is the air they breathe. The pulse within their hearts. The music within them.

Dean Misdale is one such person for whom pop music is an all consuming force. After all, he’s both a DJ and a drag queen (Feminem Hygiene), forms of expression which both require a healthy, consistent input of pop anthems – the DJ needing to know what’s hot and what will make the crowd scream and jive, while the drag queen needs pop to help constantly reinvent herself and her style… just like Madonna. But now Misdale is embracing pop in a whole new way: with his voice.

Misdale took some time out to chat with OUTinPerth about pop music, the demo he has in the works and his upcoming – and highly anticipated – appearance at Pride Fairday on Sunday September 27.

What opportunities did appearing on Australian Idol provide?
When I auditioned for Australian Idol I hadn’t sung for a few years because I had been focusing on my DJing and Feminem, so making it so far on Idol was such a huge confidence boost and a big wake up call for me to get back into singing.

How would you describe your musical styling?
Shameless and unapologetically POP!

Are you currently recording a demo? Can you tell us what it’s about, the overall sound?
Over the last year or so I have been writing and recording a demo which possibly may be released as a demo (watch this space), and it’s a pop music project which stays true to my character and shows me doing what I do best.

How are you feeling about appearing at Fairday?
I am extremely excited about Fairday! I guess you could say it’s a bit of a comeback performance for me as a singer, and also the first time that a lot of people will have heard me sing as they are all so familiar with me being a DJ or Feminem.

DJ, drag diva superstar and now singing sensation… what’s the ultimate goal for Dean Misdale?
My ultimate goal has always to be an entertainer and I am so lucky to already have achieved that. As for the future the skies the limit but looking forward I would love to travel overseas for song writing/recording trip.

Do emerging music artists have enough support here in Perth?
This is a really tough one. As someone who is such a pop based singer/performer it’s really hard to find venues to perform in as most want bands or singers who play an instrument as well. So being able to perform at Fairday is a huge opportunity and I must thank Pride WA for their support.
