Experimental is too loose a term to give to L.A. artist, Daedelus.
He’s been dubbed a musical dandy due to his taste in aristocratic fashion. His fashion is a red herring for anyone expecting anything remotely classical from this experimental, electronic musician.
From an outsider’s view, his approach to music is closer to a mad scientist than a composer. Daedelus aka Alfred Darlington is heading to the Bakery on November 26 and spoke to OUTinPerth from his base in Los Angeles, California.
‘I came touring through there several years ago for the Laneway Festival,’ he said.
‘It was quite a quick visit but I did get a chance to enjoy Fish Pie and get a bit of the ocean there and really had a marvellous time in Perth.’
This year, Darlington released his latest (and 12th) album called Bespoke.
‘When I was making the record, I really wanted to pull from the influence of my previous life, playing in bands and playing in jazz ensembles where, sure there is a lot of voice featured on the record but they really use instruments in a lot of ways,’ Darlington said.
‘They’re there to get across certain aims and ends and there’s also instruments featured that you normally wouldn’t hear on an electro music record.’
The album received mixed reviews from leading music media, while some suggested this was his best record to date.
‘It’s been really generous and then also kind of controversial,’ he said.
‘There is an epic quality to the record, I was aiming for an epic quality and some of that epic quality is both the positive and the negative.’
‘We just live in a wonderful time for sound, right?
