Combi-Man Sander van Doorn

He combines ample studio time with regular stops on the DJ circuit. He mingles genres and he mixes up old school analog with cutting edge digital. Booked to headline Godskitchen this October, world-ranked #15 Dutch spinster Sander van Doorn explained to OUTinPerth just how much he likes to mix it up.

How did you get started? When I turned 18 I went to a club and Marco V was the resident. He kind of opened my eyes and because of him I wanted to produce my own tracks.

Your most recent release was a collaboration with Marco V, are you keen to work with anyone else? The one with Marco was fairly special. It was a true combination between me and Marco, and obviously you learn a lot from looking over someone’s shoulder, but I’m really used to producing music on my own, so I’m not too focused on doing collaborations in the future.

Other DJs you admire? Benny Rodriguez. He is more of a house-y minimalist DJ and I used to listen to him a lot when I was clubbing myself.

Are you a Studio or Live DJ? I like the combination between producing a track, and then after a weekend on the road, to have a weekend off and some more studio time.

Is techno your main genre? My whole career the last few years has been about trying to create a mixture between different styles. When I play in places like America, I usually do longer sets which means I start more house-y and work it from there.

Any areas of electro you really don’t like? The real hard stuff like hard dance and hardcore isn’t really appealing for me, but other than that I love it all – house, minimal, drums, techno.

The Tech Revolution – love it or loath it? The big difference has been the shift from analog music to digital music and that opened a lot of new doors for producers who wanted to try producing the music themselves. I think that’s a really great development because it made music so much more accessible for people, but to be honest, I still use analog instruments in my studio. I still have a passion for vinyl, but it is impossible to travel with vinyl, and in studio, I can play something out on CD in the same night. From that perspective, I definitely embrace the digital revolution, but I still like the whole look of vinyl and the sound, even the crackle of it, I think it is more unique.

Sander van Doorn and Godskitchen hit Metro City Perth on Friday, October 10. Tickets have already sold out, so if you don’t have yours, mark your calendars for next year!
