Black Swan State Theatre Company have announced their scintillating 2020 season line-up, and next year the company are telling ‘Stories From Here’.
BSSTC will be bringing together the best artists from across our great state to share stories that will entertain, delight, surprise and get people talking, with a fully-loaded season complete with world premieres, collaborations and a musical!
Returning Artistic Director Clare Watson says that “Black Swan’s 2020 season looks at power, progress and place.”
“The places we will visit together hold stories that seep into the people that inhabit them. Those that hold power will try to cling to it, while others seek it and succeed, only to discover that it’s perhaps not the prize they were hoping for.”
Black Swan’s 2020 season kicks off with an Australian classic; Tim Winton’s epic Cloudstreet. A co-production with Malthouse Theatre, the iconic work will be performed as part of Perth Festival in the beautiful His Majesty’s Theatre.
Next, the stories head down to Manjimup with a hilarious local adaptation of Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard from Adriane Daff and Katherine Tonkin. The reimagining promises charm, 1980s flair and a self-absorbed ensemble of Kath & Kim inspired characters.
After the orchard, BSSTC returns home with six home-grown stories in Unsung Heroes. A melange of tales from six local writers, celebrating every day Western Australians who have experienced the most extraordinary things.
The state tour continues with a spooktacular visit to York, with a local ghost story that plays on 200 years of history in WA’s oldest inland town. WA Youth Theatre Company join BSSTC and writers Ian Michael and Chris Isaacs in this world premiere under director Clare Watson.
On the international stage, Australian journalist and commentator Van Badham reimagines the dystopian playbook that is Animal Farm, just in time for the 2020 elections in USA.
BSSTC will also collaborate again with Malthouse Theatre on Wake In Fright, inspired by the cult favourite Aussie thriller of the same name, and get ready to sing along with Oklahoma!, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classic musical.
Black Swan will also be hosting the inaugural Maali Festival, a First Nations takeover of the State Theatre Centre held during NAIDOC Week, celebrating indigenous culture and arts.
