Art Shorts – July 2011

RENDER PEN KISSES
As kids we used to splay open our activity books and pause in anticipation when presented with connect-the-dots pages: who knew what all those dots would yield, the image’s ghost form alluring in its incompletion. Local artist Tane Andrews (award winning designer from Of Cabbages & Kings and Dilettante visual merchandiser) plays connect-the-dots on a whole other level. His intensely detailed, elegantly spectral botanical images are created through rendering, a building up of the image through thousands of tiny dots. This July sees his sight shift across dot, paper, laser cut and kinetic sculpture in a month long show at Venn Gallery called {REFORMATION} adapting impermanence. Not to be missed, Andrews is an emerging talent whose work is worth discovering… and adding to your personal art collection too. Opens July 22 until August 19 at Venn Gallery, 16 Queen Street, Perth. www.venn.net

140 DELIGHTS
Potentially one of the more interesting fashion spaces in the city, 140 is perpetually evolving. It’s located on Level 1 at the corner of William and Murray in the city, that new complex jaunting up over the train station and mall. It’s a honeycomb of possible locations, making it the perfect spot to play host to pop up designer sales and other such fashion things, like glorious parades. Now, come Sunday July 10, 140 will be getting back to heart of fashion by presenting the latest Made on the Left markets. These two names combined promise a day time feast of home-grown talent, hand-made joy, covetable creativity and delicious designer wares. She Seldom Blushes (pictured) is one such label, created by Fern Valessi. Prepare to fall in love with fashion goods and the gorgeous space playing host to them. Made on the Left runs Sunday July 10 from 11am until 5pm at 140. www.madeontheleft.org.au

SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME
We can draw shapes. We can throw shapes. And now we can help shape the shape of ballet, literally, in an exciting collaborative project between The WA Ballet and you. Through online support the general public has the opportunity to choose a choreographer, the trajectory of their choreography, the music, costume design, hair and even make up. Three choreographers – each a dancer with The WA Ballet and each anonymous until the entire selection process ends – have put themselves forward for the ultimate organic process in creating Neon Lights. Also showcasing alongside this truly 21st Century work will the world premier of a new work from New York based ex-pat Reed Luplau. The Centre and its Opposite will also appear on the billing, making its Australian debut. This is not to be missed. Shape the footfalls of Neon Lights before purchasing a ticket to witness these three works at the State Theatre Centre, from July 23 to 30. www.waballet.com.au

DREAM JOURNEYS
Fremantle is a breath of fresh air. It welcomes with surging tides all the dreams we can cram inside a wall of shipping containers. In the afternoon, it draws the Fremantle Doctor in, cooling the cooked roads with a sea salt sigh. And then there’s the arts community that thrives there, nowhere more apparent than at Kidogo Arthouse. To help celebrate NAIDOC week this July, a group of Aboriginal artists are throwing open the doors to entice you in with an exploration of traditional and contemporary Aboriginal culture and the chance to share in Living Our Dreams. This is an opportunity to discover a new side to Fremantle, one wound with the stories that weave across our land and ochre the paintbrush strokes of these canvases. Living Our Dreams opens Sunday July 3 until July 17. www.kidogo.com.au
