Amy Winehouse was a North London Jewish girl with attitude. She also had an incredible voice and made music on her own terms. As a young jazz singer, she didn’t want to be famous and even thought she wouldn’t be able to handle it if she did end up being well-known.

When she died in July 2011 at the age of 27, the media capitalised on the accumulated problems of the six-time Grammy winner.

Asif Kakadia’s documentary captures the contrast between her early life and singing career and her life under the spotlight. Her troubles seemed to come with fame but actually it is more complicated than that and they had their dark roots earlier in Amy’s life.

It is a tragic story of someone with such raw talent who had her self-destructive trajectory captured by the piranha paparazzi. The documentary captures Amy’s humour and shyness, her beauty and forthrightness, her vulnerabilities and brilliance.

An exclusive season starts at Luna Leederville and Luna on SX from 16 July. On Saturday July 25th there will be a special presentation of a recorded Q&A with Director Asif Kapadia and special guest.
