Alter Ego

Germany is renowned for producing some pretty spectacular electronic music, and among that glittering list of bopping tune makers is sonic duo, Alter Ego. With their acid house sound, Alter Ego are sure to be a real smash when they hit Stereosonic this November. One half of Alter Ego, Roman Flügel, took some time to chat with OUTinPerth about their upcoming Australian appearances.

Have you played in Australia before?
We’ve never played Australia before. It was a good chance to play for a bigger festival, and to have more or less a small tour going on, with the festival. And after all those years, we get to play in Australia which is great.

What are you looking forward to most about playing in Australia?
I’ve heard about the crowds you have in Australia, that they can be really crazy sometimes, and I’ve heard about the size of the festival, which will be great. I’ve heard about so many things and I’m really looking forward to the whole atmosphere. You never know – where you’ve never been before can be really interesting, and the whole country is beautiful. It’s really exciting.

Do you have an all-time festival horror story that’s happened to yourself or someone you know?
Absolutely! I remember one festival in Barcelona, in Spain, where we were supposed to play, and we arrived at the tent and they didn’t even have a table to put our instruments on. And that is the worst case scenario, and obviously we didn’t play.

Did you just walk out?
That’s what we did, yeah.

What are three things you think every punter should bring to an outdoor festival?
First of all sun cream, a lot of energy, and… whatever you need! People should just enjoy themselves, you know; have fun.

I you had unlimited funds and could organist a festival or concert anywhere in the world, where would it be and who would feature in it?
That’s a hard question! I think I’d invite all my close friends, my favourite musicians like Lytz, and we’d go to a quiet beach just south of Japan.

What do you currently love about the music industry in general?
First of all, there’s so much creativity that can be shown to the public by playing music and by releasing music, which is the most important thing, and also, it’s connecting people. That’s what I like it; music a connector. It brings people together, if they want to, and that’s what I really like about it.

Stereosonic happens on Sunday November 29 at Claremont Showgrounds.
