Liberal leader Tony Abbott has described the campaign to legalise same sex marriage at the ‘fashion of the moment’ during an interview with veteran broadcaster John Laws.

Mr Abbott comment that he was not, “someone who wants to see radical change based on the fashion on the moment.”

Mr Abbott clarified his comments later in the morning. Speaking to reporters in Queensland he said marriage was a significant issue but “not the only important issue” and if he was successful in becoming Prime Minister he’d be focusing on “bread and butter” issues like jobs and the economy.

Speaking to ABC TV Deputy Prime Minister Anthony Albanese labeled Mr Abbott’s comments as deeply offensive and said the Liberal leader was “out of touch”.

“To define sexual orientation as fashion of the moment will be deeply offensive to many Australians, particularly families as well as individuals who happen to be gay or lesbian,” said Mr Albanese.
