A Feast of Musical Treats for July

Last year WASO collaborated with Ben Lee in their wildly successful concerts under the stars in King’s Park. The concerts sold out, and many were left ruing their decision not to get tickets early. Don’t miss the boat this year, as Ben teams up with WASO again, this time at the Perth Concert Hall. Delivering a mix of his hits rearranged for orchestra, along with characteristically articulate and off-beat banter, Ben Lee is a unique performer with a deservedly growing international reputation. Don’t miss out on tickets – and while you’re at it, hop on to www.www.outinperth.com for your chance to win one of two double passes.

While you’ll have to wait for August to catch Ben Lee, there’s some great concerts in July that are worth venturing out into the woolly weather for. We’ve been lucky enough to score some free tickets for OUTinPerth readers. For your chance to win see www.www.outinperth.com to register.

This September, Perth will reverberate to the sounds of Festival Baroque, a joyous celebration of Baroque music that is the first of its kind in Australia. On July 17 is Concerto Paradiso, one of the many events heralding the festival proper. Soprano Sara McLiver, Cellist Catherine Jones and Baroque Trumpeter Leanne Sullivan et al join forces to present a selection of works from composers including Vivaldi, Handel and Torelli. There’s a double pass up for grabs, courtesy of Festival Baroque Australia.

Musica Viva have been responsible for bringing some truly stunning artists to Perth, as anyone who was lucky enough to hear their most recent concert, The Tokyo String Quartet, will attest. This month they are offering another in their breathtaking series, with Steven Isserlis (cello) and Denes Varjon (piano) presenting a program of works by Robert Schumann and like previous Musica Viva concerts, this one is not to be missed. We have 5 double passes to give away for the concert on Tuesday, July 21.

Mozart’s Piano Concerto No.22 K482 is in good hands later this month, when Piers Lane joins WASO for a rendition they’re spruiking as ‘elegant and inventive, lively yet lyrical’ Also in store is a selection of symphonic stories from Smetana, Dvorak and Janacek, which are given a Maestro’s touch by Czech conductor Jakub Hr?Å¡a.
OUTinPerth has two double passes to give away to the concert on Friday, July 24.

Tchaikovsky wrote of his sixth and final work, the Symphony Pathetique, ‘I have never felt such satisfaction, such pride, such happiness as in the knowledge that I have created a good thing’. This masterpiece, that was so dear to the composer, is being brought to life by WASO in three concerts. Conducted by Simone Young, and featuring pianist Cedric Tiberghien, the concert begins with a delectable entrée of Prokofiev (Piano Concerto No. 2) and Rodion Schedrin (Concerto for Orchestra No. 1 Naughty Limericks).

Courtesy of WASO we have two double passes to giveaway for the performance on Friday, July 31.
