A Cut Above…

Summer has truly arrived. With it comes the thought of doing something with that mop of hair that might have unexpectedly grown out over the cooler months. What to do? Where to get it cut? Who on Earth to trust? Well… OUTinPerth has taken the hard yards out of the process and found three of the hottest hairdressers in town. Now all you to do is pick up the phone and ring.

James Thomas Lünt
Maurice Meade Claremont
PH – 9384 6744

As the youngest of the three hairdressers here, James steps up to the mark with a tenacious style. Yes, he may still be young, and as such still playing inside the lines, but that’s the best place from which to eventually push boundaries.

‘I enjoy and have confidence in using a series of different texturisers,’ James said when asked about his own styling secrets. ‘Material by L’Oreal is designed to give a matt-texturised effect. But I find when used sparingly and with long length men’s hair it compliments and creates a tame softer classical ’50s style whilst maintaining height and which lasts to the end of a big Saturday night’

When it comes to trends, James notes that women of all ages are increasingly becoming more confident in how they want to look. Yes, subtle nuances of length and style will always direct a given cut, but James says that women are consistently stepping out of their comfort zones, daring themselves to take that extra step.

For men’s hair, however, James has a particular vision in mind.

‘I like the classical and well groomed gentlemen look with twists of grunge and new romantics, those ’90s and ’80s touches, including disconnected lengths and undercuts in more of a soft blended form.’

James recommends Material by L’Oreal, Clay Paste by Sebastine and Wella’s Matt Wax.

Holly Wood
Taylor Weir School of Hairdressing
PH – 6103 0488

With a name like hers, you’d expect Holly to light up a screen or captivate attention, and that’s most certainly what she does. More importantly though it’s what she does to hair that makes heads turn.

‘When it comes to men we are seeing disconnected lengths and texture through the top and front finished with solid precision edges,’ Holly said when asked about her trend predictions for the coming summer.

And for women?

‘Short, strong and bold cuts are at the forefront of women’s fashion. We are seeing a shift in more soft textured perimeters, and fringes are a dominant feature in haircuts.’

When it comes to styling, Holly explained that more organic anti-gravity effects were being used to create big silhouettes on the catwalks of the world, all of it rounded off with a deconstructed finish.

Seamless shiny brunettes and warm blondes will also be big this season.

‘Muted tones and contrast between roots and mid-lengths are still very much in fashion for this summer,’ Holly noted.

Holly recommends Kevin Murphy’s Session Spray.

Ryan Ross Williams
Penny Quill Hair Parlour
PH – 9227 7740

Ryan is the one you go to see if you wanna suggest a cut… and then have him take that little step further. Audacious? Yes. Risk taker? Most certainly.

‘The ’80s is back with a vengeance which means perms are being reborn – bigger and higher is always better!’ Ryan said of the coming forecast for hair.

While men seem to be moving into a more LA barber style, with softer edges and workable textures and lengths on tops, women are looking to men for the next in cuts.

‘Ladies are sporting more wedgey boy crops,’ Ryan explained, ‘or one length base shapes accentuating fine details in varying trends.’

According to Ryan this season’s biggest colour trend is Balayage.

‘It’s where the colour is a seamless flow from dark to light working in all tones, but especially warm tones are the hottest choice right now.’

Ryan recommends Kevin Murphy Hair Resort, Kevin Murphy Gritty Business and Kevin Murphy Gritty Business.

And finally… still looking for options? Well, OUTinPerth has further recommendations for you. There’s a shiny bright talent emergning over at Lee Preston Hairdressing (PH – 9367 3688). Her name is Georgia and she is completely vivacious and over the top, but diligent too. And, our personal fave and the one we use is Maria Cain at Head Studio in King Street (PH – 9481 6464). Edgy with a fantastic eye, Maria is also refreshingly down to earth. Don’t be surprised if you get put on a waiting list, she’s that good.
