SceneOUT: June

First up – how good was the The Diva’s drag show at the Court? More of that, please, it was quite the spectacle.

Also not a bad spectacle was the 2007 Pride Committee’s first party for the year, XES: Deep Desires at Heat nightclub. The tunes were good; the venue worked I thought; and that second show was a stunner.

If you enjoyed Kenny L’s set at XES, then there’s chance to catch him again on June 8 as he lends support to the great Armin van Buren at the White Party, Metro City. If you haven’t got your tickets yet, then… too bad, so sad.

You might, however, be able to enjoy a repeat performance from another XES favourite, Mel B, when she lights up the decks at Connections, June 3 of the (Foundation Day) long weekend. She’ll be joined by DJ’s Darren Briais & Brian Edwards and the fabulous Ms Swish Eveready as your entertainment for the night. Look out for an appearance at the club by DJ Paul Herron. The man hails from London, plays dirty funked up house, has graced decks across the world from Amsterdam to Sydney, and ain’t bad looking to boot. He’s scheduled to appear June 9.

Also vying for your attention on June 3 is the annual winter Ministry of Sound tour, to be held at Metro City/Club Capitol. Big names from the line up include James Zabiela, Shapeshift, John Course, Dirty South and Mark Dynamix. A word from a Ministry veteran – if you’re going, pick a venue and stay there. Trying to do swapsies during the night will only leave you out in the cold.

Speaking of out in the cold – that’s exactly where you’ll end up queuing if you don’t turn up early to The Court during their ongoing renovation. They have a new night in the works, too – Courtship on Tuesdays. It’ll be the only gay and lesbian dating event around town, so if you feel like snogging, er snagging, someone to exchange body heat with this winter, get on to their website and register.

Guaranteed to heat things up in June are those two ever popular purveyors of queer parties – the Lick and Climaxx crews. Lick kicks off the fiesta with Coyote Ugly, June 29 at Phoenix – 237 Hay St. They’re promising sexy shows, pole dancers, giveaways and lots (and lots) of girls. If you recover in time and don’t mind a bit of boy sweat, or if you are a boy (and actually quite like boy sweat), then it’ll be off to Gilkinson’s the very next night for you (June 30) as Climaxx hosts its ever-popular White Party (not to be confused with the Van Buren White Party earlier in the month). With DJ’s Scott Anderson and Peter Newton, the usual laser spectacular and free candy and smelly stuff for the party goers, this is not one to be missed.

Other DJ/club nights that are not-so-gay but likely to be equally good include

  • Nick Skitz, June 1 at Rise
  • DJ Shadow, June 2 at Gilkinson’s
  • The DnB Industry Sessions, feat Bad Robot, June 9 at the Bakery
  • Freestylers at Ambar, June 16 – sold out
  • Bexta, June 29 at Rise

And if that ain’t enough, all the regular one-nighter soirées continue through June:

  • Code 7456 (anyone else work out that 7456 spells ‘pink’ on yer phone?) – every Thursday at Phoenix, (rumoured to be more then a one nighter, soon…)
  • F**k Me I’m Famous, Wednesday nights at The Shed
  • Pride Women’s Sundowner, June 13 at the Grapeskin
  • Pride Professional Network, June 20, at the salubrious Brisbane Hotel
  • and of course… the annual Pride Quiz Night, promised to be bigger and better this year in its new home at the Italian Club. It’s happening June 27, and the thing always sells out – so get your table booked now.

Me gets the feeling that if you try and take in all that lot, the words of the Scissors Sisters may ring very true:  ‘And you’re going on your fifteenth bender… But you’ve only got a matter of time’

But hey. You can sleep when you’re dead.

Disclaimer: At the time of the XES party worked Aram was a member of the Pride committee, where he worked his box off. Lacking such an important piece of equipment has been a severe blow to his cricketing career and as such he has resigned in order to focus on a return to form.
