The barkcloths made by the Omie Women Chiefs of the Oro Province in Papua New Guinea are said to be both dazzling to the eye and nurturing to the mind and heart.
The barkcloths are created first in cloth and then painted with designs using natural dyes and ash, and ceremonial ritual and stories of the ancestral past play a part in the enhancement of the iconography used. Although this is their first major exhibit in WA, the fledgling artists’ cooperative have over a dozen works in major collections including the National Gallery of Australia.
